THIS week's fishing spotlight is on Pinbraid fishery at Colmonell, where Hugh Izat (pictured right) caught a beautiful 6lbs rainbow on a gold headed orange fritz on Saturday.
Hugh, from Rutherglen, has a holiday home nearby and has been coming here every weekend with his wife Teresa for 22 years.
He caught his fish in shallow water off the island, on a fast retrieve, using a 10-foot rod and 7wt line gifted to him by one
of his 29 grandchildren.
Tom Moore, Ballantrae Caravan Park manager, fished at Pinbraid one evening last week and caught seven trout in under an hour, keeping a 3lbs blue and returning the others.
This week's other catches included George Reid from Girvan, who used sedges and a CDC to catch five fish (all returned), including a specimen 12lbs 8ozs brown trout.
Bill Wood, who runs the fishery with wife Pauline and brother Jimmy, said: "It takes a lot of work to keep the fishery in good condition, especially with the weed at this time of year, but the large numbers of fish being caught justify the long days we have put in throughout the summer."
Double figure fish are still being added to the popular water, and anglers are required to return the larger fish when caught.
Hunterston Fishing Club chose Pinbraid for a special competition on Saturday, and 14 anglers caught 23 fish between them, above.
The winner was Campbell Leitch, with four fish and a weight of 12lbs. The heaviest fish caught was 4lbs 8ozs, and club secretary David Findlay said: "Our members voted to come here for this event because of the quality of the fishing and the warm hospitality."
