Carrick gets crafty for biodiversity
CARRICK craft enthusiasts are being encouraged to get in touch with their wild side in a new community garden initiative.
Girvan Community Garden is preparing to put the Carrick town on the European map by taking part in the Patchwork Meadow project.
The scheme, which celebrates the art and culture of wild plants and their landscapes, aims to re-inspire interest in wild horticulture by encouraging people to help make a “Bayeux tapestry for our times” - a patchwork “meadow” of flower-based fabric designs.
People are being urged to create their own 15cm patch, both individually and as groups, drawing on themes including myth and folklore, medicinal plants, and even Robert Burns or Harry Potter! Each completed patch will join counterparts from across Europe to form a virtual patchwork on the project’s website, www.wildflowereurope.org.
Girvan’s community garden will offer information, advice, materials, and space to create from January 27 to March 17, when patches must be submitted. The project is open to participants of all ages, free, and fun! Patch-makers are welcome to visit the community garden each Sunday to work on their patch, to get help, or to top up on materials.
