Nestle backs kids healthy eating project

A MAJOR Carrick employer has pledged to make childhood obesity plummet by pumping £820,000 into a healthy eating initiative.

Nestlé UK, whose Girvan factory employs around 65 people, has partnered with award-winning curriculum-based healthy eating and activity scheme, PhunkyFoods, on a new Healthy Kids programme.

With existing Healthy Kids programmes running in more than 60 countries, Nestle will help roll the PhunkyFoods curriculum out into Girvan primary schools as part of a three-year process involving schools at Nestle manufacturing sites.

The town will be one of eight locations to benefit from the partnership, but - being designated part of the third round of towns - will not see PhunkyFoods enter into its schools until 2014.

With Nestle’s backing PhunkyFoods, which was founded in 2005, will develop additional online resources, create a team of nutritionists to support schools in adopting their curriculum programme, and reach an extra 339 primary schools around the UK.

Nestlé UK nutritionist Liz Read said; “Our global Healthy Kids programme is making a tangible difference to children’s understanding of nutrition and health right across the world.

“Drawing on this breadth of expertise, our new UK programme represents a significant investment in health education for children in our communities. We very excited about the programme’s potential in terms of direct health benefits to the 76,000 children involved.”
