More new homes for Scotland

Figures released today by the National House-Building Council (NHBC) show registration levels to build new homes in Scotland are improving due to a boost from the Commonwealth Games.

Applications to build new homes during rolling quarter February-April 2012 were 37% higher than the same three month period in 2011, rising from 2094 to 2877.

Many councils experienced growth in registrations during rolling quarter February-April 2012 when compared to the same period last year, and Glasgow demonstrated a particularly positive improvement (from 107 to 866), with 700 planned new homes for the 2014 Commonwealth Games accounting for much of this growth.

Commenting on the latest new home registration figures for Scotland, Malcolm MacLeod, NHBC director for Scotland, said: “Despite a monthly decrease when compared with March, the rolling quarter comparison with last year reveals a healthy increase, with a boost from the new homes planned for Glasgow.

“Discounting these planned new homes, however, the rolling quarter figure still maintained slow but sustained growth on last year, suggesting hope of a healthier long-term outlook. We must now try to extend this encouraging start to the year into the next quarter.”
