Strathclyde police boss wants probe into Girvan patrol claims
A PROBE is likely into whether retired Strathclyde Assistant Chief Constable John Neilson used his contacts to obtain police protection for his wife’s elderly aunt living in Girvan, writes Bob Burgess.
It’s claimed the 12-day Operation Park Road cost the force £25,000.
Mr Neilson says he called a divisional commander two months after he left because he was concerned the pensioner, who had Alzheimer’s and lived alone, was being targeted by drug addicts. But he maintains he did nothing wrong.
The issue came to light when Sergeant Martin Porter said complaints about extra patrols were not handled properly. He is taking the police authority to an employment tribunal.
Mr Neilson’s relative died aged 83 last year.
Strathclyde police said: “The Chief Constable [Stephen House] believes passionately in police officers being seen to set an example in matters of probity and leadership.
“Transparency is an essential aspect in demonstrating this. Not to put too fine a point on it, the chief believes that if you have done nothing wrong, then you should have nothing to hide.
“That is why he has written to the Convenor of Strathclyde Police Authority to encourage him to pass this particular complaint to another force for investigation.”
