A tribute to a true music legend

It rather amazes me that while ITV devotes so many hours of prime time television to the X Factor, the people who end up winning it rarely become regular faces on television.

Back in television’s past, successful singers became very prominent in mainstream television.

While Cilla Black is perhaps best known now as having been the presenter of Blind Date; she also had her own BBC variety show in the 1960s and she also did various sitcoms for ITV in the 1970s.

Lulu, Sandie Shaw and Val Doonican were amongst those singers who went on to star in many successful television shows over the years. Many popular singers of the sixties and seventies became household names, unlike most of the equivalent singers of today. One of these was Elton John – who has The Morecambe and Wise Show and The Muppet Show among his TV credits. Elton is a singer who is known the world over, for his unique stage outfits; his boundless energy; his great stage presence and above all for all the wonderful tunes he has composed.

On Friday night there will be a special hour and a half programme in which he will be presented with the first Brit Icon award. He will be interviewed and have various tributes paid to him.

But best of all Elton will be putting on a mini concert. Some of his greatest songs - including I’m Still Standing – will be performed in addition to some new material. Elton John is not just someone who once made great music. He continues to create great music today. So if you are not able to see him live here is the next best thing – a concert by Elton plus extras. IAN K
