Citizens sought to champion the cause for older people

CARRICK residents are being encouraged to become a champion for older people’s issues.

Age Scotland is inviting people in South Ayrshire to become Champions of Older People - getting involved in spreading the word about the charity’s work, and taking a lead in community fundraising to ensure that its activities can continue and grow.

Age Scotland is involved in many South Ayrshire groups for elderly citizens, including the ’65 Club, which received £1000 towards the cost of holding Christmas parties with a dinner in 2012 - enabling the club to offer tickets to the parties at a reduced price to members.

And now the charity is seeking out community-minded individuals to champion their cause.

Gillian McManus, Age Scotland’s local community and events fundraiser, sayis “Champions can do anything; from organising coffee mornings to pub quizzes, cocktail evenings to dawn walks. You don’t need to have any previous experience - if you’ve got a good idea we can help you make it happen.

“Whether you are retired, at school, working or at home, we would love to hear from you. Champions just need to share our goal of making Scotland a better place for older people by empowering them to demonstrate their value; to themselves and to others.”

South Ayrshire Seniors’ Forum chairwoman, Les Anderson, said: ““I think the more people that champion the elderly and the issues that are confronting them both now and in the future can only be good. We support this proposal from Age Scotland 100 per cent”.
