Latest Scottish guitar star to play in Ayr

Sean Shibe.

Sean Shibe.

Sean Shibe, Scotland’s 20 year-old star of the classical guitar performs at Ayr Town Hall on Saturday 1 December with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He and the BBC SSO perform a work soaked in the sounds of Spain, Rodrigo’s Guitar Concerto, one of the most famous of all works for guitar.

Sean, from Edinburgh, embarked upon an international solo career at the age of 16, the same year he entered the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the youngest artist ever to have entered the establishment. He is also a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, having been admitted to this showcase scheme earlier this year as its first classical guitarist. He also recently won the Royal Overseas League’s top prize at its 59th annual music competition and is now studying for a Masters Degree in Austria.

Also featured in the concert is the world premiere of a brand new work from veteran Scottish composer John Maxwell Geddes, An Ayrshire Suite, specially commissioned by Ayr Arts Guild and the BBC.

Mr Maxwell Geddes said “I have a long and happy association with both Ayrshire and the BBC SSO, and so I was delighted to respond to the idea of writing a work for the orchestra based on historical aspects of the region, to write music and celebrate heritage”

The programme is completed with two works by Mozart, the beautiful Adagio for Glass Harmonica, arranged by conductor Andrew Manze, and one of the most popular of all his works, the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony.
