New Carnival Queen at Port William

Port William’s new Carnival Queen Lauren Fingland was crowned in Port William today to signal the start of the annual village carnival week.

The crowning ceremony was held in the marquee on the Harbour Green in a rain storm, but that didn’t put off a full house of residents and visitors who turned out for the crowning.

The new queen, who took over from 2013 Carnival Queen Sian Milven, was crowning by Port William’s citizen of the year George McKenzie.

In her first speech, the new queen said that carnival week had always been the biggest week of the year in her family and she was looking forward to her duties and meeting everyone. She thanked Sian for the excellent job she had done as queen during the past year.

The first casualty of the weather was the sports day which had to be cancelled.
