Park Fest set to rock

Stranraer’s Park Fest, now in its third year, is going to be bigger than ever this year.

The event is going to be headlined by John Beattie’s Ruckstars, also playing are Eric Faulkner from the Bay City Rollers, Xavia and an eclectic mix of local acts and renowned bands from further afield.

The weekend kicks off on Friday, August 17, with the inaugural Young Guns Night. This is an opportunity for the young, talented musicians of Stranraer to take to the stage. With five bands playing it’s a great opportunity to showcase local musical talent.

The main event will be on Saturday, August 18, starting at noon with around 14 bands and solo acts, the music on stage kicks off at 12.15 with The Elastic Band, who are returning to Park Fest by popular demand. The last act will be John Beattie’s Ruckstars who start their set at 10pm.

Mandy Green, who is organising the weekend with her team and crew, said: “It is great to hold an event like this in Stranraer to raise money for the RNLI, provide a stage for talented musicians and put on a great weekend for all. We are really pleased with how enthusiastically everyone has got behind the festival, including local businesses, organisations and the council who have offered a great deal of support.”

One such supporter is Bailey, who are supplying a guitar which will is being raffled in the lead up to the festival and will be drawn on Saturday night. The guitar is being hand built by Bailey for Park Fest and is worth around £1300.

Park Fest has been causing quite a stir in the music scene. Mandy has said that the event has attracted international interest with musicians from around the world clamouring to come to such a lovely part of southern Scotland.

Terry Simpson is the lifeboat operations manager at Stranraer lifeboat station and also owns a local bakery and provides catering for musicians, staff and volunteers in the green room over the weekend.

Terry said: “It has really helped to raise awareness of the importance of the lifeboat station within the community, long may it continue.”

Stranraer inshore lifeboat crew are hoping to raise in excess of £6500 for the RNLI over the weekend.

The weekend will also feature a fun fair, craft stalls, face painting and much more.
