Royal Aeronautical Society

This month’s talk is by Eric Gillies. He is currently an Honorary Research Fellow in the Aerospace Sciences Division of the School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow,

Eric will discuss the air combat fighters of 2016 and 1916, the Typhoon and the Sopwith Camel, and focus on their instability, agility and, in the case of the Camel, curious handling characteristics. Described as “highly strung, skittish and easily spooked”, the Sopwith Camel was nevertheless one of the most successful fighters of World War 1. It first flew 100 years ago (December 1916)-it is a wholly different beast to the Typhoon fighter of today, but at the Camel’s heart lies a surprising similarity.

The lecture is on Monday the 10th of October and starts at 7:30pm, the venue is the Aviator Suite, Prestwick International Airport.

Visitors and Guests are welcome, and an opportunity to meet over tea or coffee will be available in the Aviator Suite (situated on the upper floor of the terminal building) during the evening. The lecture will begin at 7:30pm. Entry is free to students in full time education; otherwise there is an entry fee of £3 for visitors. The airport parking fee for visitors is £2.50, payable at the Information Desk.
