Batman became a huge success on television in 1966. The adventures of Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) in Gotham City became a success as each week they faced at least one special guest villain played by a famous guest star.
The series was not to everybody’s taste though and some of the character’s original fans felt that it was more comic than it needed to be.
Despite its initial success this version of Batman only lasted for three seasons although it did get repeated from time to time. Since then there have been many animated versions of Batman which have been very successful. On Monday night at nine o’clock on channel 5 there is a new series set in Gotham City.
However it is at the time when the parents of a young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) have just been killed. It centres on the character of Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) who is determined to solve that case and to make Gotham a better place for law abiding people to live in. The series will feature some of the early days of the criminals who will become some of Batman’s most famous opponents including Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman. For fans of the Batman franchise it will be interesting to see how this version of the Batman legend plays out and how some of the famous characters from the Batman universe are reimagined here.
This will be a more grownup take on things and more in keeping with the recent films. For fans of the 60s TV series, they will be delighted to hear that a full bluray boxset will be released in November. Hopefully unlike the excellent Once Upon A Time, Channel 5 will show all the episodes of Gotham!
