Youth Parliament seeks new members

YOUNG people with voices to be heard are being encouraged to put themselves forward for election to the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Nominations are now open for young people from across South Ayrshire to put themselves forward as a candidate in the forthcoming Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) elections, which will be held in March 2013.

The Scottish Youth Parliament – which is not party political – represents Scotland’s young people aged up to 25 years and aims to ensure young people’s voices are heard on the issues that matter and action is taken on the issues that affect them. And three new members of the SYP are being sought.

Any young person aged between 14-25 years and living in South Ayrshire can stand as a candidate in the elections. All that’s needed is passion, determination and a commitment to the role of MSYP.

Jamie Candlish, MSYP from Girvan, said: “Being a member of the Scottish Youth Parliament was extremely rewarding. You get others’ voices heard as well as your own by those who make key decisions in the country.

“You can help others in your area where you believe help is needed and you can have a huge national influence with the SYP’s national campaign, which has been extremely successful the last few terms.”

Fellow MSYP Kirsty Lang, who is from Ayr, said: “My term as an MSYP has been a whirlwind of fun and new experiences. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life so far!

“As MSYP I can proudly say that during my term, I helped to get 16 and 17-year-olds the vote in the independence referendum and was part of an organisation that led the way forward for equal rights.

“It’s opened my eyes to the amazing work that young people do for change and a realisation that anyone can make a difference.”

South Ayrshire Council’s Youth Champion, Councillor John Hampton, said: “The Scottish Youth Parliament genuinely gives young people a voice and it’s vital the youth of South Ayrshire are represented by the best possible candidates, so I would encourage anyone who is interested to put their hat in the ring.”
