GIRVAN Swimming Pool is in line for a stay of execution.
South Carrick councillors Alec Oattes and John McDowall lobbied members of the Scrutiny Panel in protest at the Leadership Panel's decision to demolish the harbour complex.
Mr McDowall is confident the Leadership Panel will accept the proposal
and give the town's community until the end of this year to put together a rescue package.
Both councillors presented enough evidence to the Corporate and Community Planning and Resources Scrutiny Panel for it to recommend that the Leadership Panel rethink the decision.
Said Mr McDowall: "I was able to present evidence to the Panel, both as the local member and as Labour group leader, that this decision to demolish had been taken without any consideration of the impact this would have on efforts being made locally to reopen the pool.
"And it did not take account of the very strong feeling within Girvan that South Ayrshire Council have ignored the clear wish of the people to retain a swimming pool in Girvan. Given that the council acted immediately following the closure decision, the next day in fact, to remove fixtures and fittings from the pool my concern was that the pool and the toilet block would be demolished quickly and before any further consideration could be given to its retention and reopening.
"I am pleased to say that after much debate and discussion the Scrutiny Panel agreed to recommend to the Leadership Panel that no demolition should take place before December 31, 2009.
"This has still to be agreed by the Leadership Panel at its next meeting but I am confident that they will do so."
Now the two Girvan men are encouraging any local groups wanting the pool saved to act fast and put their plans to council officials.
Mr McDowall added: "What all of this means though is that any community groups or entrepreneurs who are currently exploring ways of reopening the pool only have until the end of December this year to present any proposals to the council.
"After this date, the pool and the toilets will be demolished.
"I would urge any group with proposals for the retention or re-opening of the pool to present these to the council as soon as possible and well before the end of December in order that they can be evaluated and considered by the council as there will be no further opportunity to do so once this date has passed.
"I also welcome the statement made by Councillor Oattes on behalf of the Administration in last week's Gazette that funding has been allocated to install temporary toilets at the harbour.
"Until new facilities have been built and I will expect this promise to be kept if and when the harbour toilets are demolished."
