A GROUP of pals from Crosshill has scooped £10,000 on STV's Postcode Challenge.
The team, captained by Alan McEwan, featured on last Monday evening's edition and they struggled to keep their success a secret.
Alan said: "You aren't meant to tell anyone how you get on until it has been aired. But the fact we were drinking champagne on a Tuesday afternoon was a bit of a giveaway!"
It was Alan who had noticed the advert to apply for the show on the Maybole community website and thought he would give it a go.
He added: "Many weeks ago there was an ad on the Maybole page asking for people to apply to go on a game show here called Postcode Challenge. I applied, put a team in from Crosshill and we won it!"
With the help of his team-mates Aaron Lucas, Martin Hoggit, Martin Dunlop, Myron King and Roy Knight they came back to the Carrick village with the big prize.
Alan said: "We split the money six ways - though the captain is meant to get half the money! We agreed this would happen right at the start when we went for the auditions. A couple of the boys are away on holiday with their families so I am sure the money has come in very handy. A couple of others have already had weekend breaks away and the money has been great for that as well."
In the Postcode Challenge, each team has six members who all have to come from the same postcode. Neighbours play together to win prizes of £1,000 upwards. Each team has a main contestant who answers the questions with help from the rest of the team. By round three, two teams are left.
In the final, two main contestants, one from each team, go head to head. But neighbours play a huge part in the final outcome – because the size of the prize depends on the answers they've already given. So anyone with know-it-all neighbours is in with a chance to share up to £25,000.
The questions posed by Carol Smillie are on general knowledge, covering everything from music to nature. And because the programme is about communities there are questions on environment, lifestyle and wellbeing too.
