A DELIGHTED Reinier Saxton claimed the 113th Amateur Championship at Turnberry last weekend to round off a great week's golf.
Saxton defeated 17-year-old Tommy Fleetwood three and two through some tough final day conditions.
And with Turnberry hosting next year's Open Championship, it gave The R&A a clear indication of how the course is shaping up for the third major of
the year.
But it was Saxton's performance over the final 34 holes that was the real talking point as he fired home a terrific eight birdies on his way to sealing the championship and a place in this year's Open at Royal Birkdale and next year's US Masters at Augusta in April.
The 20-year-old Dutchman claims he was fairly relaxed throughout the final and grabbed the half he needed for victory at the 16th hole.
What looked like a comfortable win never really was the case and the afternoon session had a lot to live up to after a fantastic first 18 holes.
Englishman Fleetwood clawed his way back into the match after dropping two of the first three holes and then had to do so again on 17 and 18 to finish the morning all-square.
Fleetwood continued his good run when he got himself in front, but it turned out to be the last time he would hold it as then Saxton really turned it on and levelled immediately at the second and took the lead at the third when his opponent bogyed.
The Dutchman pulled further away after the turn with an excellent up-and-down at 11 and birdied 12 to leave Fleetwood trailing.
He looked to be heading for trouble at 13 but scrambled to a half and really knock the stuffing out of the young Englishman.
A half at 16 was enough for Saxton to claim the victory and become the second Dutchman to win the tournament after Rolf Muntz 18 years ago. It was a fitting final and showcased Turnberry for hosting the Open, for the first time in 15 years, and gave some indication where the professionals may have some difficulty next July.
The par-five 17th hole in particular, where Nick Price eagled on his way to secure the Claret Jug, has been lengthened and three new bunkers included and there were a number of lost balls throughout the qualifying round.
