THE FUNDAMENTAL Schools review from South Ayrshire Council has recommended the closure of two Girvan schools.
The considerations given by the report into South Ayrshire's school estate suggest closing Sacred Heart Primary and Invergarven School.
The report argues that neither school is "it for purpose" and a review of both schools should be incorporate
d into the wider review of council facilities in Girvan which is already under way.
It has also been suggested that a new purpose-built school could combine a brand new swimming pool for pupils' use and for the general public.
The idea of a shared campus between Sacred Heart and Invergarven would be welcomed by Labour's John McDowall but only if their is a clear commitment to proposal.
He said: "If there was a clear commitment to replace both schools with a shared campus then of course I would welcome it.
"And if there was plans to build a new swimming pool as part of the campus then that would be great. But there is no clear commitment over the swimming pool."
Mr McDowall added: "If both schools have to be replaced then so be it. But as long as there is a clear commitment, then I would welcome it."
No clear timescale was given for these plans but it is thought that 2012 could well be the starting year for the build should the money be available.
The review also discussed the rationalisation of denominational provision in Ayr, Maybole, Mossblown and Prestwick into a 5-18 years old campus at Queen Margaret Academy.
It also acknowledged that it would not be feasible to include Sacred Heart in these plans as it would include 40 miles travelling a day for pupils.
In other areas of Carrick, the review recommended to retain Kirkmichael Primary School, Straiton Primary School and Dailly Primary School.
Plans are now in place with Kirkmichael community in order to involve them in the design and delivery of a new school after a feasibility study was carried out into replacing the school on the existing site.
A t Straiton Primary the Leadership Panel had already approved a refurbishment programme for the school which will see an extension to existing accommodation to create link with PE/dining hall and new accommodation to upgrade facilities for staff and pupils.
The council has decided to retain the primary school in Dailly, but the educational and technical assessments have highlighted the school buildings as having major problems in relation to condition and suitability and proposes to explore options for replacement or refurbishment.
