Top pub title for staff at the Roxy
A CARRICK pub has scooped a top award for food excellence in one of the industry's most acclaimed competitions.
The Roxy beat off entries from all over Britain to land the Punch Shine Award for Food Excellence 2008 thanks to its "pub grub menu with a twist" from chef Mark Swift.
Manageress Eleanor Beattie said the staff were thrilled to bits to pick up the title at last week's swish lunch at Mar Hall in Bishopton, Glasgow.
She added: "We're all really proud to have won and, as you can imagine, the trophy is in pride of place in the bar!"
More than 1000 entries were received for the four different categories - food, drink, customer and community - and these were whittled down over weeks of secret judging by Punch Taverns staff.
Eleanor added: "Our food is really a pub grub menu with a twist and our chef only started with us a few weeks before the judging began, so he's quite proud too."
As well as the prestigious title, The Roxy, in Girvan, was awarded Gift Experience vouchers which can go towards a long list of days out across the country.
Although Eleanor had her sights set on a relaxing spa day, she's kissed goodbye to that idea and will instead make sure all the staff benefit.
She said: "We will probably go out paint-balling or something - use it for a staff day out.
"Everyone deserves to benefit from it, as the award came down to a number of different things including service and the overall environment of the pub."
Punch's operations director Kevin George said: "More than 1000 nominations have been received from customers, employees and Punch's business relationship managers, with 1086 pubs now visited by a mystery customer to assess the pub on a range of criteria.
"The Shine Awards are a perfect opportunity for Punch to say thank you and reward those truly exceptional licensees who deliver fantastic customer experiences every day.
"They are the ones who make us passionate about our pubs."
