Anger over Maybole road closures

Maybole High Street is being badly affected by the closures.
Maybole High Street is being badly affected by the closures.

Road resurfacing works which saw the A77 closed for an entire day on Sunday at Maybole have been blasted.

Councillor Brian Connolly who also owns BDC Fuels in the High Street hit out at Transport Scotland for their lack of communication.

The works meant the road was closed from 8am-8pm with parking restrictions between John Knox Street and the golf club.

Councillor Connolly said: “I only got the letter on Friday telling me about these works.

“This is the third time in the last 18 months or so that they have done this and it means there is no access from the top of the town to the bottom of the town.

“Transport Scotland have done no public consultation on this and it is crippling businesses in the high street and it hurts businesses like Souters too who would be as well not opening up when these works are on.

“It is a complete disaster for the town and there is a complete disregard for the businesses.

“You get a slight bit of business when they open the road but you’ve already opened up for the day and paid staff.

“The first time they did this I accepted it but it’s happening again this Sunday and that will be a sixth day of takings that businesses in the High Street have had to go without which shows their complete lack of consideration.”

However, Gordon Wilson, Scotland Tran Serv’s Contract Director said: “Across south west Scotland we are improving the trunk roads network on behalf of Transport Scotland, supporting the economic growth and development of this important region.”

“Carrying out these remedial works will ensure long-term, tangible benefits for drivers in this part of Ayrshire.”

The A77 will again be shut at Maybole this Sunday to carry out approximately 700m of works in the town.

The road will be closed between 8am and 8pm with parking restrictions in place between John Knox Street and Maybole Golf club.
