Girvan is now home to a Beach Volleyball court standing proudly on the sands of Girvan shore.

The new local facility is the result of inspiration from Matt Wilson, local young person and P.E. student at Edinburgh University.

Matt drew up an impressive proposal for consideration by the South Carrick Community Leisure shadow board which caught their attention and support.

The equipment was purchased with a small amount of funding from South Ayrshire council set aside for improvements to Sport and Leisure facilities in the area.

Matt said: “with plans for a new complex to be built in the next few years, I started thinking about projects that were possible to achieve quickly and so came about the beach proposal which aims to spruce up Girvan’s Beach. The volleyball nets were the first phase of this proposal.”

“The facility will help promote the game of beach volleyball in South Carrick by involving a wider number of people and will hopefully grow a local interest in the sport”.

”Local people can access a volleyball for a £5 returnable deposit from the Westcliffe hotel on Louisa Drive and I would like to publicly thank Mr and Mrs Jardine for agreeing to support this new initiative.”

Due to seasonal changes in the weather it is anticipated that the beach volleyball nets will be in situ from May – September each year and it is hoped that if there is sufficient interest locally, another set of nets may be installed.

There will be a launch of the beach volleyball facility on Sunday August 14 with coaching and mini-tournaments for 12-16 years and 16+ led by Stirling University coach – Giannos Panayiotakis.

The coaching for 12-16 year olds begins at 10am and concludes at in a mini tournament finishing at 2pm.

The over 16s coaching begins at 2.30pm and finishes at 7pm following a mini-tournament and there is no maximum age for this session.

Parental consent will be sought for those under 16 and forms will be available in advance of the event from the Carrick Buildings, Henriatta Street. Everyone taking part will also be asked to register on the day.

Girvan Youth Trust will be selling BBQ food and soft drinks on the day. If the weather is poor, the event will relocate to the games hall in Girvan Academy.
