Stranraer-based Thorney Croft Care Home and day care centre has collected two top prizes at the Community Integrated Care 25th Anniversary Awards.

It was a star-studded national ceremony that celebrated the quarter of a century of history of one of the UK’s biggest charities.

Thorney Croft Care Home, a residential home for people with age-related needs and dementia, along with its adjoining day care centre, scooped the prestigious Better Together award for their delivery of quality care through strong teamwork. The team collected their trophy from Coronation Street favourite Julie Hesmondhalgh, also known as Hayley Cropper, who hosted the event.

Also victorious at the event was the home’s head housekeeper, Mary McWhirter, who took home the prestigious Customer Service award in recognition of her tireless work ethic and dedication to always going beyond the call of duty. It’s day care manager, Margaret McCurdy, was also shortlisted for a Bright Spark Award, which recognised her creative approach to care.

The glittering ceremony, which was held at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday, drew together more than 450 people from across the UK to mark the 25th anniversary of the charity, and featured a live performance from X-Factor star Mary Byrne.

Community Integrated Care was formed in 1988 to support people with learning disabilities to move on from institutionalised hospitals to living in the community. It now supports more than 2500 people across the UK, including over 700 people in Scotland, with learning disabilities, mental health concerns, autism and age-related needs. It employs in excess of 5000 staff across the country.

Neil Matthewman, Community Integrated Care’s chief executive, said: “For a charity to deliver life-enhancing care and support in the community for 25 years is an incredible achievement. Our success has only been made possible because of the dedicated and ambitious work of incredible people like Mary.

“My sincerest congratulations to Mary, Margaret and the Thorney Croft team, as well as our other finalists and winners, who truly deserved their moment in the spotlight,”
