Restoring Maybole Castle as a local community project is moving forward slowly.
That was the summing up by Peter Mason, who chairs Maybole Castle Community Trust, in his annual report to the trust’s AGM last week.
He told members: “We have been successful in our bid to Historic Scotland and have been made a provisional offer subject to us meeting certain requirements. We have to provide further technical information from our architects, Robert Potter and Partners, in regard to work required on the castle roof, gutters, etc.
“At present our aim is to make the castle wind and water tight and then proceed with internal redevelopment.”
Mr Mason added: “Andrew Eastern of RPP met Historic Scotland’s technical support officer, South Ayrshire Council’s conservation officer, and the Cassillis Estate factor to discuss the removal of two of the extended chimneys, alterations to some of the roof valleys and the difficulty in keeping the existing gutters clear. This is still an on-going discussion.”
