Community spirit prevails as power cuts hit villages

WITH an estimated 100,000 homes throughout Scotland without power last week due to high winds blowing trees on to power lines, residents in Barrhill and Pinwherry were in the dark for four days as Scottish Power drafted engineers in from Ireland, Wales, and Merseyside to handle one of the biggest power cuts South Carrick has seen for many years.

People flocked to stores to stock up on emergency items. Sandra Ferguson, area manager for Wrights Home Hardware, told the Gazette: “We had a big run on candles, gas heaters, portable gas cookers, torches and batteries.
