Concerns were raised this week by Maybole Community Council over the loss of day care services for the elderly in the town.

They presented a petition of 851 signatures to South Ayrshire Council’s Public Processes panel asking them to retain and enhance the day care services within the town.

The services have been lost after the council agreed to transfer users from the Castle View Day Service and Rainbow’s day care service shut in August.

The services have been transferred to Nursery Court in Girvan and the community council raised concerns about the lack of access to day care facilities but also about the cost and time to travel to Girvan.

After discussing day care services in Maybole the panel agreed that the consultation undertaken regarding changes to day services had not been full enough.

The panel asked officers to bring a report back outlining ways in which the community council and other groups will be consulted and involved in future and to work with them to identify other potential facilities, within the Maybole area, which could be used for social and community care related activities. The panel also asked for information on the transport arrangements of the current set-up, where service users attend day services in Girvan and research is also to be undertaken on the service users’ experiences to date.

The information will be reported to the next meeting in December.
