Councillor breaks hip after icy fall

The Street Party in Girvan was missing it's usual puppetmaster last Friday night after a freak accident

Organiser and local councillor, Ian Fitzsimmons, slipped on ice and broke his hip the day before and missed the event he organises.

And to add insult to injury, he slipped on an untreated council car park in Girvan.

Speaking to the Gazette on Tuesday morning, councillor Fitzsimmons said: "I should be home today or tomorrow (Wednesday), but I'm OK.

"My hip is broken and I'm under doctor's orders to take it easy for six weeks. So I'll be having a nice relaxing Christmas to look forward to.

"There was no way it was going to get cancelled. I'll be back next year to organise it again."

Councillor Bill McIntosh, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: "I have been in regular contact with Ian - who is a friend as well as a colleague - and his family since his fall at the end of the week and visited him in hospital over the weekend.

"I was delighted to see he was in good spirits and I know I speak for everyone within the council when I wish him a speedy recovery.
