SOUTH Ayrshire Food Bank has opened up a new premises in Maybole.
The food bank was set up in March last year and has so far given out more than 1180 food parcels.
The service already has premises in Prestwick, Ayr and Girvan and has now opened up a hub at the Carrick Centre in Maybole.
The food bank recives items of food from individuals, churches, schools and community groups and also asks supermarket shoppers to buy an item for donation.
People who need food parcels are recommended by social services or GPs and are able to collect them from local hubs.
Project manager Ellen Mitchell said: “We want to raise awareness of the new service in an area which has one of the highest instances of social deprivation in Scotland, with 36 per cent of people on some kind of benefit. In Girvan, the figure is 23 per cent. When we opened in Maybole there were already three people waiting for food parcels.”
The Maybole hub is open Monday to Friday from 8am-10am and manned by volunteers. The food bank can be contacted on 01292 671038.
They will also be at Asda, Girvan on April 5 asking for food donations.
