Girvan conman is jailed for nine months

A Girvan conman has been jailed for nine months after being found guilty of duping pensioners in the town.

Billy Vennard of Roxburgh Road was jailed last week at Ayr Sheriff Court after he stood trial on charges relating to attempting to obtain money via fraudlent schemes.

The 27 year old had pretended to be a charity collector at various addresses in the town and also on one occasion pretended he was collecting money to help children with alcoholic parents.

Vennard was accused of pretending to a 91 year-old woman that he was authorised by the Girvan Youth Trust to be collecting money for a sponsored road race.

He was also accused of pretending to an 84 year-old man that he was authorised to collect on behalf of the Z1 Youth Bar.

His fraudulent activity took place between February 22 and February 28 this year and involved houses in Girvan’s Boyle Court, North Park Avenue, Bourtreehall and Rodney Drive.

Police and the Girvan Youth Trust had launched an appeal for information after being alerted that someone was going round claiming to collect on behalf of the youth organisation.
