The Girvan Rotary club welcomed two new members to its ranks recently; Mr Jim Henderson, an accountant from Turnberry and John Andrew, a retired sales director who spent the last thirty years in Bath and is now staying in Turnberry.
Twelve Girvan rotarians including Jim and John made the trip to the Caledonian cheese factory in Stranraer which started with a presentation from Jane Haywood on the history of cheese making in Stranraer. Sue Walker and Wendy Hutton then went through the milk buying , milk selecting and the key relationships held with their core local farmers. Members were then shown round the factory by Alan Dow,who showed the manufacturing and packaging sections.
The trip revealed the huge effort put in by the factory staff to ensure quality of incoming raw materials and hygiene levels within the plant itself.
The Rotarians were impressed by what they saw and thought it was smashing to see a real Ayrshire/Scottish product, which was so enjoyed by British shoppers . The club returned to Girvan that evening for their normal meeting in the Royal Hotel. They were given a special sea bass course which was a great finish to a foodie day. Meetings are held at the Royal Hotel every Tuesday evening at 6pm where all are welcome.
