The poor turnout by local senior citizens at an event staged in Girvan last week has been blamed on a lack of support by local businesses and community councils.
The first of five Information Road Shows, aimed at providing older people with useful information about the various support services available, attracted an attendance of around 70 senior citizens to the North Parish Church Hall – significantly below the 120-plus figure expected by the organisers, South Ayrshire Seniors’ Forum.
Now the chairwoman of the forum, Les Anderson, has called into question whether enough was done to publicise the event and to let elderly people know that free transport was available for them.
A total of 25 different organisations were represented at the event. But Mrs Anderson said “Despite contacting local cafes & tearooms as well as Community Councils seeking support since September last, requests for posters to be displayed and contacts with older people who might have required transport did not happen.
