“It was gym-tastic!” That’s the verdict from budding young athletes of the future who have taken part in a superb gymnastics contest, organised by South Ayrshire Council’s Active Schools team and local gymnastics clubs.
The event saw a range of floor and vault contests keenly contested by pupils from primary schools in the area and owes its success to a new South Ayrshire Gymnastics Forum – established between representatives from South Ayrshire Council, Dundonald Gymnastics Club, Ayr Gymnastics Club, South Ayrshire Gymnastics Club and Scottish Gymnastics – all committed to increase participation at all levels in gymnastics.
Councillor Margaret Toner, Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning said: “I love gymnastics and this event was superb! Staff at our primary schools benefited from a series of excellent coaching sessions by a tutor from Dundonald Gymnastics Club and the results from this have been amazing.
“I was absolutely amazed with how talented, energetic and flexible our pupils are!
“From floor to vault we have witnessed some excellent routines and many very creative gymnastic interpretations and all credit to our young competitors for putting on such an excellent show and giving the contest their best shot.”
This is first time such an event has been organised within South Ayrshire and follows a series of successful sports taster events run by the Council’s Active Schools team, all aimed at building the Council’s Commonwealth Games Legacy Programme – promoting healthier lifestyles through increased activity for all primary schools in the area, particularly in a Commonwealth Games sport.
Councillor Toner concluded: “Many sincere congratulations to everyone involved in organising this excellent event – it was literally breathtaking from start to finish.
“All our young people should take great credit from their performances in this event. They have done themselves and their schools proud and I wish them all every success as they progress in this demanding and exhilarating sport.
“I’d also like to thank Dundonald gymnastics club for all their hard work in helping organise and run this event and I look forward to seeing many more being delivered in the future.”
