Just before Christmas, one of Kirkoswald and district’s best known faces retired as postman for the area.
He was renowned for always having a cheery word whenever and wherever you met him, and some of the older or housebound members of his round looked forward even to a delivery of “junk mail” from Jimmy. Without a doubt, he was a credit to the Post Office and to humanity in the district.
Accordingly, a number of his friends – for we all looked on him as a friend – gathered on Saturday 12th January to make a farewell presentation to Mr James Campbell and his wife.
The presentation had been organised by Mrs Sheila Dunlop, the current postmistress at Kirkoswald, and her husband.
Mrs Dunlop is seen in the photograph above making the presentation to Jimmy. Mrs Ella Rae, who was sub-postmaster in the village when Jimmy started, is presenting a bouquet to “Mrs Jimmy” in the company of a good group of villagers.
