A show about a high street creates an actual shop on the high street for a couple of weeks.

Girvan Musical Society is opening a box office this
Friday in Dalrymple Street in the former premises of the Shoe Box.

The box office will be open weekdays from 10am until noon and 2pm until 4pm through to March 6. Tickets for this year’s production of Acorn Antiques – The Musical will be available, as well as the chance to enter a raffle to support the society.

President of the society Fiona Johnson said of the concept: “It’s quite a novel idea to have a show about a main street and to actually open a box office on the main street. We hope people will drop in for their show and raffle tickets and talk to one of the members about joining or becoming a patron.”

Acorn Antiques is a musical comedy with dance and revolves around a plot that pitches antique dealers and their shopkeeping neighbours against property developers set on revamping the traditional high street in the fictional town of Manchesterford.

Fiona continued: “It’s another great new show for our wee corner to enjoy in the comfort of the Girvan Academy Theatre, and £8 is a bargain for a pick-me-up in these long dark nights and this is a pick-me-up. Sometimes a bit ‘Crossroads’, sometimes a bit rude, great one-liners, catchy tunes and tap dancing! What more do you need? Like the TV show, spot the mistakes and the over-acting and dear Mrs Overall having a ‘moment’. Victoria Wood is a very funny lady and it shows in the music and dialogue brought to life for us by our director, Andrew Nicol.

“Check it out on Youtube if you’ve never seen it before – it’s unique!”

The society, now in its 17th year, has performed shows ranging from The Pirates of Penzance to last year’s production of Curtains and has received acclaim from audiences from its inception in 1998. Both Fiona and Andrew, as well as many others, have been involved since the beginning.

The show runs from Tuesday, March 11, through to Saturday, March 15, with doors opening at 7pm and curtains up at 7.30. Tickets are also available from The Sweetie Shop and members of the society as well as the box office.
