A714 remains closed after weekend road accident
TRAIN and road services were disrupted following a traffic incident on the A714 near Girvan on Sunday.
A vehicle collided with the Glendrissaig railway bridge at around 12.50pm. The driver was uninjured, but the bridge parapet became damaged and loose.
The Ayr to Stranraer rail link was cancelled on Sunday afternoon, but normal service resumed on Monday morning. The A714 remains closed in both directions between the A77 junction in Girvan and the B734 junction in Pinmore as a result of the incident. Diversions via Stranraer are in operation.
Mike Newall, South Ayrshire Council’s Head of Planning and Enterprise, said: “The road closure was requested by Network Rail to allow them to complete emergency repairs to the damaged section of the bridge and we are working closely with them to minimise the disruption to road users.
“We have received assurances from Network Rail that the repair works are well underway and they advise a two-way traffic control signal will be in place shortly.
“This will allow traffic to use the road again, with additional repair work taking place at night to further improve traffic flow along the A714.”
An injured motorist also had to be airlifted from the scene of a two-vehicle collision near Ballantrae on Sunday.
Girvan police officers and traffic officers were called to a road accident on the A77 near Ballantrae in the early afternoon of Sunday, September 30.
Police have confirmed the individual was airlifted only as a precaution and there were no serious injuries.
