Big smiles for Ayrshire dental team

The British Dental Health Foundation is delighted to announce NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Oral Health Promotion team scooped the ‘Best National Smile Month Event’ at the glitzy Dental Awards ceremony on Friday night.

Held at the Lancaster London Hotel, the Dental Awards recognise and reward the highest standards in UK dentistry and oral healthcare. The Scottish team won the award for their contribution to the ‘Smile Factor’ campaign, beating off stiff competition from Oxfordshire Health Promotion team.

Hazel Andrew, Senior Oral Health Promoter for NHS Ayrshire & Arran commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have won Best National Smile Month Event. We were honoured to represent the team at such a prestigious event and have our hard work recognised nationally. We were so pleased to have been shortlisted for the award, but to win was above all our expectations. Hearing our team name being called out was such a magical moment that we will remember for a long time to come. Although the real stars of the show were the youngsters who took part!”

For their entry, the Oral Health Team used the example of one of their community events to help engage and involve local people in shaping oral health services. The event took place in Kilbirnie and involved almost 300 people including primary school pupils, teachers, parents, pharmacy and dental staff.

The primary school children took part in a ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ style contest, with categories including singing, dancing, poetry and musical instruments - all with an oral health theme. This informal approach allowed for maximum engagement with everyone who attended.

Commenting on the awards, Sophie-Marie Odum, chair of the judging panel and group editor at Purple Media Solutions, said: “The event was a huge success. I would like to thank those who entered and congratulate all the winners.”

NHS Ayrshire & Arran weren’t the only ones to scoop a prize during the evening. Sponsored by Colgate and in association with Mouth Cancer Action Month, three lucky raffle winners also had a night to remember.

Presented by Tony Newton, President Elect of the Foundation, the top prize was a trip to New York, followed by a 12-bottle case of champagne and a 12-bottle case of wine.

The Foundation wishes to thank Colgate for their continuing support and generosity and welcomes other commercial sponsors to help raise awareness of this ever-growing disease.
