Carrick crime campaign “successful”, say police
CARRICK has seen a crackdown on crime with hundreds in contact with police as a force-wide campaign targets local criminal activity.
Strathclyde Police’s five-month initiative, Operation Myriad, came to Carrick last month under Ayrshire’s fortnight-long focus, and saw local policing teams join forces with other organisations and receive support from additional units to tackle area policing priorities.
At the launch of Myriad in Ayrshire, Chief Superintendent John Thomson said it would be a chance for a “cohesive focus” on criminal activity.
“This is an opportune moment to build on some of the success that the cities have secured,” he said. “This is no leafy glade; there is as much happening here as there is in Glasgow.”
The two weeks from February 16-28 tied into existing action plans on road traffic and rural crime under way in Carrick.
In total 113 individuals and 271 vehicles were stopped and searched as part of road traffic activity, while an eight-strong Strathclyde Police support unit (pictured left) visited 36 licensed premises in Girvan and Maybole on Friday February 22.
A total of 56 traffic offences were reported, including speeding, lack of insurance and defective vehicle use – and three vehicles were removed by police. 15 apprehension warrants were also executed.
Two Maybole men were reported to the Procurator Fiscal regarding misuse of drugs, while three individuals were the subjects of a report in relation to metal thefts totalling £13,500 in value from a Maybole property and a local farm.
Acting Inspector Derek McMurdo said the operation had been “very successful”.
“For the number of officers that work in our Girvan and Maybole offices it’s a great result, and just goes to show what can be achieved with a wee bit of additionality,” he said.
“Operation Myriad has been an excellent platform for us to continue intelligence-led policing, positively impacting on areas hat cause our communities the greatest concern.”
