Children’s charity challenges Carrick kids to break record

SAVE the Children is encouraging pupils in Carrick to join their peers across the globe in attempting a marathon of a challenge.

The World Marathon Challenge, taking place during the first two weeks of October and leading up to World Food Day on October 16, aims to raise awareness of the global hunger crisis which costs millions of lives every year around the world.

It hopes children across Britain will join together and attempt to break the world record time of 2h 3m 38s, set by the Kenyan athlete Patrick Makau, by running in relay teams.

The World Marathon Challenge began in 2008 and has grown each year, with school teams from more than 30 countries having taken part.

Douglas Hamilton, Save the Children’s Head of Scotland, said: “The World Marathon Challenge is a fantastic event for children to get involved in, especially after seeing the success of Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. The great thing about this event is that schools don’t need to have a professional running track to take part – they can do it anywhere.”

Since 2008 13 schools around the world have managed to beat the marathon world record, with Kenyan children being the fastest - setting an incredible time of 1h 51m 52s.

Participants run 200m sections between six and nine times to make up the full marathon distance and teams can take part on World Food Day itself or any time during the two weeks before.
