Coalfieds regeneration chairman honoured with MBE

EX-MINER Peter McNestry, a founding member of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, has been awarded the MBE for his services to coalfields communities in the Queens New Year’s Honours List.

Peter, a Yorkshire man has become a familiar figure in Scotland’s mining communities, particularly since he took over as Chair five years ago.

He said: “This honour reflects the commitment and dedication of thousands of ordinary people and volunteers who have worked so hard to help former mining towns and villages recover from the devastating effects of the loss of the coal industry.

“It has been a great privilege for me to lead the CRT, but the people who have made the greatest difference are the former miners and their families who live and work in these communities”.

Scottish Trustees Tom McAughtrie and Nicky Wilson the Trust’s Vice chair paid tribute to Peter’s leadership skills.

Nicky Wilson said: “Peter has made a tremendous contribution to the work of the Trust, from the early days when he was part of John Prescott’s Task Force which led to the formation of the Trust, though the last few years when he has chaired the organisation.

“His MBE is richly deserved”.

Tom McAughtrie added: “Peter is a well-kent face in Scotland, and indeed mining communities in England and Wales. It has been a privilege to work with him to further the aims of the Trust”.
