Crowds welcome Olympic torch relay

The world’s gaze fell on South Ayrshire on Friday morning as the Olympic Torch relay made its way through the area.

The torch arrived in Ballantrae at 7.06am and despite the damp weather crowds gathered to watch in all the towns and villages along the torch’s route - Girvan, Turnberry, Maidens, Kirkoswald, Maybole and Ayr.

Thousands lined the streets in South Ayrshire as schoolchildren waved flags as the Torch Relay passed by.

The streets in all the towns were festooned with Olympic flags and streams of bunting and many homes decorated with flags.

Highlights of the relay in South Ayrshire included local schoolboy and sportsman, Ryan Speirs, being waved off from Carrick Academy as he carried the torch through his native Maybole, and large crowds at Stumpy Corner in Girvan who cheered loudly as the torch went by.
