Decrease in empty land in South Ayrshire
VACANT and derelict land is South Ayrshire has decreased by 27 per cent over the past six years.
South Ayrshire has seen one of the highest reductions in vacant and derelict land in Scotland since 2006, beating the Scottish average by 24 per cent.
South Ayrshire was placed eighth of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas in the Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey 2012, the results of which were released on Thursday, according to percentage reduction in vacant sites.
The region beat both its Ayrshire neighbours, with East and North Ayrshire seeing an increase in vacant and derelict land of 1 and 13 per cent respectively, and placing 22nd and 30th.
The county with the largest decrease was Argyll and Bute, with a 57 per cent reduction, while the Scottish Borders placed last with a 59 per cent rise. Scotland as a whole saw a three per cent decrease.
However South Ayrshire was one of only 11 areas to see its total area of vacant or derelict land increase on 2011.
The county saw a three-hectare increase in empty land last year, while 15 local authority areas and Scotland as a whole reported a decrease.
But Jill Cronin, South Ayrshire Council’s Head of Community, Enterprise and Development, said South Ayrshire’s progress in appropriate brownsite site redevelopment – including for local council housing schemes – was something to be proud of.
“We’re delighted our ongoing efforts to bring disused and empty land areas back into use has resulted in a strong showing in the 2012 Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey,” she said.
