Some 338 young people aged between 14 and 25 from South Ayrshire schools and youth projects have received Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Awards at an annual celebration event hosted by South Ayrshire Council last night (20 February 2013).
The event reinforces the Council’s position as the leading Scottish Local Authority in delivering the award, with more than 1,500 young people having completed a bronze, silver or gold level since 2008.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is open to young people aged between 14 and 25 years and offers a wide range of activities and community participation, including volunteering, arts, crafts, personal and physical development, teamwork skills and leadership.
Gold participants also have to complete a residential element to successfully complete their award.
Speaking at the event, Councillor Margaret Toner, Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning said: “For five years we have been out in front in the delivery of this prestigious award programme to our fantastic young people.
“I believe the reason we enjoy such success is down to a forward-thinking approach to wider attainment in school, with many elements of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award forming a key part of how we deliver the Curriculum for Excellence.
“By carefully tailoring a flexible and wide ranging educational package to each of our pupils, we are helping them to enjoy and succeed in their learning, while also having the opportunity to have some incredible life experiences which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
Barry Fisher Director of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scotland said: “South Ayrshire Council’s commitment to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is admirable and sets an example to all Scottish local authorities.
“The young people honoured at this year’s ceremony should all be very proud of their achievements.
“It takes a significant amount of effort and commitment to achieve an award, whether at Bronze, Silver or Gold level and once again, I offer my congratulations to each of the recipients in 2013.
Councillor Toner concluded: “The Duke of Edinburgh Award helps our young people build self-confidence, improves their inter-personal skills and stands them in good stead for the future.
“The awards ceremony has given us the opportunity to congratulate our remarkable young people on their successful completion of bronze, silver or gold awards, with each and every accolade as unique and as valuable as the young person who achieved it.”
