Family and friends mark Polly’s centenary

LAST Tuesday, June 12, Mrs Polly Rodgers celebrated her 100th birthday with family at Fairknowe House Nursing Home.

Originally from Maybole, she was the eldest of six children and her parents, James and Margaret Lindsay, lived in School Vennel, with James working in Cameron’s garage. Mrs Rodgers and her late husband were married in Maybole West Church and had 12 children.

One of her birthday gifts was a family tree and it shows that they went on to have 111 direct descendants. During her life, there have been four monarchs, beginning with King George V, followed by Edward VIII, George VI and the present Queen Elizabeth; 19 Prime Ministers, beginning with Herbert Asquith; and 18 US Presidents from William Taft onwards. People who were born in 1912 include Prime Minister James Callaghan, Perry Como and Gene Kelly.

It was also the year that Scott and his team reached the South Pole to find that Roald Amundsen has got there before them, the Titanic sank, the National Insurance Act 1911 brought in National Insurance payments, Suffragettes were trying to get votes for women, the Olympic Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden, and Ayr United won the Scottish Division Two title.
