Gig on the Green this Sunday
GIG on the Green is taking place on Sunday 24th June 2012 from 12 noon til 8pm at Stair Park, Girvan.
The event is hosted in partnership with Carrick Futures and South Ayrshire Council. Bands which will also feature on the day are: The Ninth Wave, Grey’s Anatomy, Audio Juice, The Goodfellows and DJ Stefan Janik.
The ‘Grand Prize’ raffle is also taking place with a £200 first prize and raffle tickets are available from most local shops where a poster will be displayed, businesses etc.
The Train Wreckers is an Ayrshire based 4-piece which originates from Louisville, Kentucky and comprises: Gattlin’ Axe Forman (guitar), Footstompin’ Leroy Scott (vocals, bass and harmonica), Towerin’ Memphis Stax (tenor sax, BV & story tellin’) and Cool Hand Luke Younger (drums).
The band plays a very diverse genre of music called “USSR” (Unlimited Surfin’ Swingin’ Rock’n-country-roll) and features songs primarily from the 50’s to the 70’s – from Pulp Fiction to Johnny Cash.
The band’s critically acclaimed performances and diverse musical styles have enabled them to perform at equally diverse gigs/venues. The Train Wreckers have consistently won new fans at every outing – whether supporting 70’s star Alvin Stardust at a fully seated concert or opening for Springsteen’esque Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes at a sell-out 600 capacity all standing gig on The Ferry, Glasgow. The band opened for punk legends Stiff Little Fingers at Kilmarnock’s Grand Hall last year, where grown punks were reduced to tears during an emotional performance by the band of the Ramones’ cover ‘California Sun’.
The band’s final gig of 2011 was opening the show at the 21st anniversary Xmas concert for Glasgow’s Soul Band, Counselled Out.
Onstage or on record, Mary Jean Lewis displays the enthusiasm, energy, and excitement of an entertainer just coming into her own. But behind that fresh verve comes decades of experience, all gained in the most important of world music capitals.
Belying her youthful appearance, as Mary Jean turns 40, she’s now making the most of all she’s absorbed and learned in her latest incarnation as leader of the roots-rocking Starlight Boys.
But as her growing legions of fans know, Mary Jean’s music is more diverse than simply updating the sound of Memphis.
Over the years, Mary Jean has lived and performed in Louisiana, Mississippi, Nashville, Liverpool, and Glasgow, and her music presents an exciting, highly individual take that draws on all those experiences.
Girvan Youth Trust would also like to hear from anyone who could lend them a gazebo for the Gig on the Green.
Any group or individual who has a gazebo they could lend the event can contact the trust on 01465 714729.
This year will also see the first unveiling of the new climbing wall.
