Girvan girl shows her grit for cancer

A GIRVAN teen will be braving the October chill on Saturday to raise money for cancer research as she takes a sponsored dip at Girvan beach.

Jennifer Clegg, 15, of 1 Penkill Road, Girvan, has been marching the streets of Carrick towns and villages in search of donations to her cause, all of which will go towards Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign.

Channel 4 aired their nearly five-hour Stand Up To Cancer fundraising entertainment programme on Friday night and, inspired, Jennifer has been working hard since then to add her own sponsorship to the show’s £6.5million raised.

Having had a traumatic year herself, Jennifer said it is her friends and family’s experiences with cancer that made her determined to support the cause.

And her efforts have attracted far more interest than she could have imagined.

Originally meant to be just herself and a friend taking the plunge, her event has become more a group effort since she created a Facebook page to promote her efforts.

“I was really wanting to do it and when I was talking to people about it I got so much support,” she said. “I just thought, ‘What the heck? Let’s do it!’.”

By Sunday Jennifer had already raised more than £100, and by Monday evening she had managed to add more than £170 that her running total.

And despite not having a fundraising target - she says every little helps - with over 70 signatures at the beginning of the week Jennifer is confident she can make significant contribution to the fight against cancer in the UK.

Jennifer’s sponsored dip will take place this Saturday October 27 between 1pm and 3.30pm. To find out more visit the event Facebook page at www.facebook.com/events/485508344815482.
