Girvan prepares for pipers’ return

PIPE band performers once again have their sights set on Girvan as the Carrick town prepares to host a prestigious competition.

The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association’s Ayr, Dumfries and Galloway branch championships are headed back to the Carrick coast in 2013 for the first time in three years.

Attracting top pipe bands from across Scotland and the north of England, Girvan has hosted the event around 20 times over the past 30 years, and, in the past, Girvan’s own pipe band (pictured) – now defunct – has taken pride of place among the competitors.

Girvan and District Attractions Committee chairman Robert Jardine said the group was delighted the renowned event is to return to their home turf.

“We are delighted once again to host the Branch Championships,” he said. “People come from all over, and it recognises the high quality of events that we organise.”
