ADVENTUROUS Girvan teens have their sights firmly set on central Asia as their fundraising for the trip of a lifetime heads into the thousands.

Students heading east on Girvan Academy’s first Adventure Lifesigns school expedition hope to build on their first successful donation drives with a calendar of cash-generating events.

Teams of teens took on a six-hour voluntary bagpacking shift in Marks and Spencer in Ayr on Christmas Eve and raised £1400; while a intrepid troop went for a sponsored Boxing Day dip at Girvan beach, raising between £50 and £400 each.

But the pupils are keen to keep the cash coming, and have already scheduled a whole host of events for 2013.

On February 1 the group will be running a clothing collection for anyone doing a January clear out of old clothes, shoes, belts and bags.

There will be a collection from Girvan Academy at lunchtime on Friday, and anyone with items to donate can bring them to The Avenue school anytime this week.

Clothing can be brought in via any type of bag (carrier/bin) to the office, or pupils can bring bags in to the social subjects department in the school.

Next month (date TBC) the Nepal crew will be running a Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook challenge through Mrs Skilling, who works for ‘The Pampered Chef’ company. The pupils will be taking part in the cooking challenge and Mrs Skilling will be demonstrating.

On March 21 the Soroptimist International group will be hosting a charity quiz night at the Westcliffe Hotel at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Entry is £10 per team of four people. Anyone interested in entering a team should call Jane Willis on 01465714268 or e-mail on mansfieldgardens@btconnect.com to register an interest.

On May 4, as part of the Girvan Folk Festival, the group will be running a fun day - including a car boot sale, car washing service, stalls, games, climbing wall, tug-o-war, and beat the goalie. Times for this event are still to be confirmed.

The teenagers and staff would like to thank Girvan Bowling Club and Carrick Futures for their donations, as well as M&S in Ayr for allowing them to bagpack.

Individuals and organisations with ideas of how they might help the Girvan team fundraise for the trip should contact Mr Drennan at alan.drennan@south-ayrshire.gov.uk, or visit their “Girvan Nepal” Facebook page.
