Girvan to champion the elderly in roadshow event

GIRVAN will lead the way in championing the elderly as the town is announced the host of the first South Ayrshire Seniors’ Forum roadshow event.

Issues faced by the over-50s are set to come to the fore in South Ayrshire, with a series of events to raise the profile of the older population, the problems they face, and the issues that matter to them.

It was revealed last week that Girvan’s North Parish Church will kick off the roadshow and it is hoped the events will then progress to Maybole, Prestwick, Troon and Ayr.

Each event will feature not just information stalls but activities for the community to enjoy, including music, readings, alternative therapies and tombola, as well as tea, coffee and food.

There will be a survey running during the week of each roadshow event and on the day, carried out by young people, and those who agree to participate will have their names entered into a prize draw.

Les Anderson, chairman of South Ayrshire Seniors’ Forum, said: “SASF is really hopeful that as many older people as possible will come on the day and will also participate in the local research.

“The most important outcome of this day would be that older people go away having enjoyed their day and having found out things they weren’t aware of before.”

The Forum also hopes to present all the results their on-the-day research to the public and to the relevant agencies to encourage action.

Tricia Watts, chairwoman of Age Concern Girvan, said the roadshow was a “brilliant idea”, and said older people would welcome the chance to put across their opinions on future improvements. The first event is at North Parish Church on Montgomerie Street, Girvan, on Thursday April 4, times to be confirmed.
