Glendoune funding success

LONG-TERM prospects are looking up for a Girvan youth hub with fresh funding and a strong local profile.

A month ago the Carrick Gazette raised fears from Glendoune Centre staff that the popular hub would be forced to close within the year due to lack of funding.

But since their plight was revealed, the Centre’s sports coaches say they have been delighted by the response.

The Glendoune Centre on Piedmont Road – from which sports and games for young people aged 6-21, living in one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Scotland, are run – has attracted South Ayrshire Council regeneration and community safety funding since last month.

National funding bodies Children in Need and Awards for All have also shown their support, while further offers of assistance from Girvan parents have been forthcoming.

And sports coaches Tommy Connelly and Darren Orr say the help has been invaluable.

“We just want people to know that all the help we have received is greatly appreciated,” said Tommy.

“It makes you feel quite humbled. I didn’t think it would last, but it has been really good.”

“We have had a lot of positive comments,” added Darren. “We are progressing and getting even younger kids in.”

The pair have plans to top up existing funds with voluntary donation drives – including regular bag-packing, and marathon and cycle challenges – and hopes of purchasing better fitness equipment for use by the children involved with the Centre’s Muga club.

Muga (Multi-use games area) activities for six to 12-year-olds run on Friday, Sunday and Monday evenings from 4-6pm, and the “fitba” friendly football league for 13-21s is at Hamilton Park on Monday evenings from 7-9pm.
