Information days for South Kyle windfarm

A PUBLIC information day is to be held in Dalmellington concerning plans to build a 50-turbine windfarm at South Kyle.

Vattenfall, the energy company behind the South Kyle Wind Farm proposal, is planning a series of Community Information Days next week in Ayrshire and Galloway. It has urged communities and local businesses to come along and view the proposed layout for the scheme before it is formally submitted to the Scottish Government later this year.

The approximate 150 megawatts (MW), 50-wind turbine scheme would produce enough power every year to meet the equivalent annual electricity demand of nearly 70 per cent of all the households in East Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway.

The company say it could also contribute £750,000 each year for important projects at a local and regional level through Community Benefit payments. If approved, this could total £15 million over the 20-year lifetime of the windfarm.

Alison Daugherty, Vattenfall’s Senior Project Manager, said: “We first visited the local communities at the end of 2011 before we had developed a layout of the wind farm. Since then the project team has listened carefully to the views and comments given at each community meeting and has used them along with those of the statutory consultees as a basis for the South Kyle wind farm design.

“We have undertaken a detailed design process resulting in a proposal for 50 wind turbines, each of which could have a generating capacity of up to 3.6MW. We would like to thank the community for sharing their knowledge and insights with us.

“Productive discussions took place at the first and second round of public exhibitions and we look forward to informing local residents of our detailed plans. We are looking forward to the next phase of development when South Kyle becomes a live planning submission and ideas on how this significant project could aid investment into the community can really be firmed up.”

The information day will take place on Wednesday, March 27 from 2–8pm at Dalmellington Church Hall. There will also be information days on Monday, March 25 from 2–8pm at New Cumnock Community Centre, and on Tuesday, March 26 from 2–8pm at Lagwyne Hall, Carsphairn.

Information on the proposal will be on display including the opportunity to observe an interactive 3D visualisation of the proposed wind farm from a viewpoint of choice.
