Joyrider told to get a job

A STRANRAER man who stole his mother’s car from Newton Stewart and proceeded to joyride around Stranraer has avoided jail.

Douglas Marr, 19, of John Simpson Drive, was told he would escape custody because he showed potential and had a good future if he could find a job.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb told Marr to help himself by finding employment while sentencing him in court this week, adding that Marr and spare time do not make a good combination.

Marr admitted driving dangerously on various streets in Stranraer. Several police patrol vehicles were called to chase him and witnesses saw him mounting kerbs, carrying out handbrake turns and speeding through pedestrianised streets in the early hours of the morning.

Police also spotted him reversing up John Simpson Avenue in an attempt to avoid being seen by them.

Sentence was deferred until December for good behaviour.
