Killochan Castle items could fetch £500,000

THE CONTENTS of a Carrick castle are expected to fetch a half-a-million-pound sum after being put up for sale in Edinburgh by a German royal princess.

Killochan Castle on the banks of the River Girvan - which was bought by present owner Princess Viola von Hohenzollern in 1997 – will be sold by Bonhams on November 7 in Edinburgh. The castle itself has already been sold after being put on the market at offers over £2.25 million.

A spokesman for Bonhams said the castle’s contents were estimated to fetch somewhere between £350,000 and £500,000, with the top lot - a Victorian sporting picture by Richard Ansdell - expected to go for £60,000-£80,000.

Princess von Hohenzollern - a wealthy industrialist whose family has steel interests in 16 countries across Europe, and herself a relative of Kaiser Wilhelm II by marriage - said it was with reluctance that she has decided to leave Killochan.

“I have long had a love of Scotland and have visited the country since the 1980’s,” she said. She added that she was often struck by a sense of wonder at the tangible history and idyllic setting of her Carrick home of 15 years.
